Johann Moonesinghe
Johann is the co-founder and CEO of inKind, a fintech that provides innovative, alternative capital, tailored specifically to restaurants. Moonesinghe is a serial entrepreneur and angel investor with early-stage investments in companies including Uber, Twilio and Allbirds. After selling his tech company, he helped fund 30 restaurants before founding and operating the first crowdfunded restaurant incubator in Washington D.C. This unique space helped support ambitious chefs to start and run their businesses from 2015-2020.
Now, as CEO and co-founder of inKind, he has created a successful dual-sided marketplace for consumers and restaurateurs. Leveraging Moonesinghe’s finance experience, hands-on restaurant expertise, and passion for food, inKind has funded over 2,600 restaurants (ranging from independent to large, multi-state groups) across the US. This is all complemented by a rich, discovery-driven consumer-facing app, downloaded and used by nearly 2 million users.
In November 2022 inKind co-founder and Johann’s 33-year-old brother, Rajan Moonesinghe, was killed by gun violence. This tragedy caused Johann to recommit to the mission-driven nature of inKind: helping transform communities across the country by providing sustainable and equitable financing for restaurant entrepreneurs. inKind has a commitment to funding $250mm to restaurant businesses led by minority operators.
